Maria Callas sings "Casta Diva" (Bellini: Norma, Act 1)
The great Maria Callas performs an aria from her signature role, Bellini's druid priestess Norma, with the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Paris and Georges Sebastian. Maria Callas: La Divina - A Portrait (1987) directed by Tony Palmer [English Subtitles]
This documentary follows the tumultuous life and career of opera singer Maria Callas. Using archival footage and interviews with Callas and critics, director Tony Palmer explains why this slender and beautiful singer was hailed by some as the greatest opera singer of the twentieth century while others called her a talentless fake. Callas rose to her status of diva by performing several lead soprano roles with a voice many called imperfect but full of emotion. It is this emotion that drew many to her and repulsed others. This emotion also tended to create problems in her personal life, giving ammunition to her detractors. The video explains how this tension created an intersting arc to Calla's career, seeing her reach the pinnacle of the opera world and then fall fast from its graces. Clips...

Maria Callas Live: Bizet's Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962

Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s f...

Casta Diva - Un aria in Norma- Maria Callas La Divina
Casta Diva
Norma, l'opera lirica di Vincenzo Bellini(1801-1835)
Cantante/Sängerin: Maria Callas
Coro Del Teatro Alla Scala, Milano
Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala, Milano
Maria Callas (Greek name: Μαρία Καλογεροπούλου; December 2, 1923 -- September 16, 1977), same called as La Divina, was an American-born Greek soprano and probably the best-known opera singer of the post-World War II period, otherwise in the history. She combined an impeccable bel canto technique with great dramatic gifts, making her the most famous singing actress of the era. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria, such as Spontini's La Vestale to late Verdi and the verismo operas of Puccini.

Casta Diva, Norma's aria from Norma
[Lirica originale]
O Casta Diva, che inargenti
queste sacre antiche piante,
a noi volgi il bel sembiante
senza nube e senza vel...
Tempra, o Diva,
tempra tu de' cori ardenti
tempra ancora lo zelo audace,
spargi in terra quella pace
che regnar tu fai nel ciel...
[English]
O pure Goddess, who silver
These sacred ancient plants,
Turn thy beautiful semblance on us
Unclouded and unveiled...
Temper, o Goddess,
The brave zeal
Of the ardent spirits,
Scatter on the earth the peace
Thou make reign in the sky...
